During the plastic product development phase, mold selection is a critical factor that determines product appearance, structure, production cost and delivery cycle. Monochrome molds and two-color molds are the two most widely used mold solutions in the injection molding industry. Many customers struggle to decide which type of mold to adopt in the early stage of a project. Wrong mold selection may, in mild cases, increase post-processing procedures and raise unit cost. In severe cases, the product may fail to meet appearance specifications or even require mold rework, resulting in heavy losses.
Combined with practical experience in mold development and injection mass production, this article explains the principles and product characteristics of monochrome molds and two-color molds, compares their advantages and disadvantages, and sorts out key selection criteria. It helps product engineers and purchasers quickly determine whether a product suits monochrome or two-color molding and efficiently plan mold solutions.
Monochrome molds, also known as single-material molds, are the most basic and widely applied injection molds. A complete set of monochrome mold is equipped with one mold core set and matched with a single-shot injection molding machine. Only one type of plastic raw material is used for injection molding. Molten plastic fills the mold cavity. After cooling and mold opening, finished plastic parts with a single color and single material are obtained directly.
✅ Simple mold structure, low mold opening cost and short mold processing lead time. ✅ Low maintenance difficulty, convenient repair and stable mass production performance.
✅ High compatibility with injection machines; ordinary injection molding machines are acceptable with low trial mold cost. ✅ Suitable for both small-batch and large-batch orders with lower project risks.
❌ The product body is limited to a single material/color; multi-color effects rely on post-processing.
❌ Surface painting and silk-screening increase unit cost and carry risks of coating peeling and poor wear resistance.
❌ Cannot realize integrated hard+soft plastic overmolding.
Typical Applications: Home appliance housings, general plastic shells, stationery casings, standard plastic gears, disposable plastic components.
Two-color molds (dual-material molds) need to work with two-color injection molding machines and feature rotating or sliding mold core structures. Production is completed in two injection cycles: the first step molds the hard plastic substrate. The mold core rotates or shifts to align with the second cavity, then the second plastic material is injected. The two materials bond tightly inside the mold to form two-color or hard-soft composite parts in one molding cycle.
Note: Two-color molds are divided into rotary two-color molds and sliding two-color molds. Rotary two-color molds are the most common type in the market.
✅ Integrated molding of two materials delivers stronger bonding strength than post-assembly or glue bonding.
✅ Eliminates secondary painting and silk-screening, reduces post-processing procedures and delivers better finished appearance texture.
✅ Supports soft overmolding on grip areas for anti-slip performance, widely used for handles and buttons.
✅ Lower comprehensive unit product cost for long-term mass production.
❌ Complex mold structure with high precision requirements for components; mold cost is much higher than monochrome molds.
❌ Longer mold processing lead time, difficult trial molding and high requirements for injection equipment.
❌ Restricted by material compatibility: not all plastic combinations can bond together.
❌ Not cost-effective for small-batch production due to high amortized mold cost.
Typical Applications: Anti-slip handles for power tools, two-color buttons, daily product handles, automotive interior two-color components, earphone housings.
Monochrome molds feature low cost, short lead time and low risk. They are suitable for single-color products, project trial runs and small-batch orders. Multi-color appearance can be realized through secondary surface treatments. Two-color molds excel at integrated molding, premium appearance and structural strength, ideal for hard-soft overmolding and two-color appearance applications for long-term mass production projects.
At the project initiation stage, it is recommended to comprehensively evaluate product structure, appearance standards, estimated order quantity and material matching to determine the optimal mold solution. We can assess the feasibility of monochrome / two-color molding based on your 3D drawings and provide mold cost estimation and mass production process solutions.
